Titania from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, No. 1 in 2011
Sally
Bollinger of Western
Springs College
has taken out the Supreme Award at the 2011 Bernina/Shakespeare
Globe Centre New Zealand (SGCNZ) Costume Design Competition, with Titania from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
With over forty semi-finalists this year, the competition was very strong. “The final decision on the order of the four finalists came down to how well the concept could be realised in construction,” said costumier Tina de Bes, “I looked for the practical aspects of how I could create the image into a costume, also taking into account the process of finding appropriate fabrics and colours.”
As
Supreme Winner of the Competition, Sally received a cash prize from Bernina, and
was automatically offered a place in SGCNZ's National Shakespeare Schools
Production.
The winning costumes will also be displayed in Shakespeare's Globe Exhibition in London from mid July to early September.
